With Heavy Hearts, Two Treasures Lost

It has been a sad few weeks for Reflections, loosing two special ladies.  Survivor names have been deleted to provide them some privacy.

Ann Whetzel Mauzy, 79, of Broadway, VA passed away January 6, 2011 at Life Care Center of New Market after a long illness with diabetes.
     Mrs. Mauzy was born September 16, 1931 in Broadway, VA, the only child of the late Howard T. and Pauline Trumbo Whetzel.
     She graduated from Broadway High School and Madison College (now James Madison University) with a B.S. Degree in Elementary Education. She taught elementary school in Rockingham County for 40 years, spending four years as a substitute teacher. When Plains Elementary School was opened, she served as team leader, until retiring in 1991. In 1985-86 she was honored as Rockingham County’s teacher of the year. For ten years (1958/1968) she was the Broadway coordinator of the Fresh Air Fund, finding summer placements with local families for tenement children from New York City, making several trips in the summer to help chaperone the children to the Broadway area. For this faithful work, she was awarded the Fresh Air Fund of Merit Award. She loved her flowers, yard work, and gardening.
     Mrs. Mauzy attended both the Broadway Baptist and the Linville Creek Church of the Brethren, being a member of the later.
     On June 24, 1951, she married Paul A. Mauzy, who preceded her in death in 2006.

Evalena Mae Darden Jones, 90, loving wife, mother grandmother and G.G., passed away Thursday, January 13, 2011. Visitation with family is 6:00-8:00 pm Tuesday at Downing and Lahey East Mortuary. Memorial service is 1:30 pm Wednesday at Wichita First Church of the Nazarene. Preceded in death by her husband Harold. Survivors include her children 1 daughter, and 2 sons (names deleted), 1 brother;  13 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established with Church of the Nazarene Ministries, 1400 E. Kellogg, Wichita, KS 67211-2699 and Darden Lecture Series, c/o Nazarene Theological Seminary, 1700 E. Meyer Blvd, Kansas City, MO 64131. I wrote about Evalena in the post It takes a village, another sharing experience, in June of 2007.  What a special time, what a wonderful lady she was.
