Reading the Small Print

Copyright 2022, CABS for Reflections From the Fence

Surfing newspapers archives can be and is addicting. I spend hours surfing those archives.  So much fun. Such a bonus and advancements in my data base.  Yes, some of my finds are tragic and so very sad.

Then, there are others.  Frankly, I was a bit surprised when this one was picked up by the indexing software.

See that pale yellow highlighter?  That's my great-grandmother from my paternal lines.  I know it is not her hubby, as his initials were R. E.  And, the fact that this is from a 1935 newspaper.  Other research seems to indicate that he had passed about 1930. I would love to prove that, and, maybe some day I will.

I suspect this is an advertising "game", where they printed names of customers throughout the newspaper and if you found your name, you were awarded some small prize, like $5.00 of groceries, or some such.  No, I am not positive, that's a guess fueled by other similar finds over the years.

Small print, such fun.

Copyright 2022, CABS for Reflections From the Fence

This continues what I hope I can turn into a series of posts, done in a very efficient (make that speedy fast) manner to share some research on the ancestors.  This is NOT intended to be the end all to end all report.  It's a work in progress, to show you what I have found, right or wrong. I have found no memorial for James, or Ivan or George Deldine on Find A Grave as of February 2022.

At some point in the future, I may return to the search for James.  For now - - he went - - poof.

Consider:
Dorothy Davidson: Social Security Death Index (SSDI) Death Record
Name: Dorothy Davidson

Date of Death: December  1983
Est. Age at Death: 78 years, 3 months
Last known residence:

From the Rhineland Daily News, Rhinelander, Oneida County, Wisconsin, published on December 27, 1983:
     "Dorothy Davidson
Dorothy Davison, 78, of 220 W. Frederick St., died Saturday at her home.
She was born Aug. 15, 1905 in Illinois.
Mrs. Davidson had been a biology teacher in Rockford.  She was a Rhinelander resident for the past eight years, residing with her friend Marian Peterson.
She is survived by her husband James of Rockford, Ill, and one niece Gloria Bowen of California.
There will be no funeral services. Hindebrand Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements."

From the January 01, 1984 issue of the New North, Rhinelander, Oneida County, Wisconsin:
"DOROTHY DAVIDSON, 78, of 220 W. Fredrick Street, Rhinelander, died Saturday, December 24, 1983.  She was born on August 15, 1905, in Illinois. She is survived by her husband, James of Rockford and a niece, Gloria Bowen of California.  She lived in town with her friends, Mrs. Marian Pederson.
     (Hildebrand Funeral Home)"

The use of her married name, in the obituaries and Social Security Death Index after many years of using her maiden name in such things as directories and the Who's Who directory is attention getting.  It's not that abnormal, but, it is one of those things that researchers note and are concerned about.  We also note the birth day is in error in the obituaries, again, "it happens".  And, we note it.

Dorothy has a memorial at Find A Grave, # 107748528. Dorothy A. Butts, born 1905, has a headstone at the Mt. Auburn Cemetery, McHenry County, Illinois.

Her headstone never had any death year added.  Photo taken by Moi in 2004 when we visited McHenry County Illinois for research.

I have not ordered a death certificate from the State of Wisconsin.  As much as I would love to have a copy, the price for kin this far out on our family tree is just high enough to make this penny pincher gun shy.

Lucy Ann Darden, Research Report, the As It Is Series

Copyright 2022, CABS for Reflections From the Fence

This continues what I hope I can turn into a series of posts, done in a very efficient (make that speedy fast) manner to share some research on the ancestors.  This is NOT intended to be the end all to end all report.  It's a work in progress, to show you what I have found, right or wrong. Kind feedback is welcomed via comments.

Let's begin - -

Meet Lucy Ann Darden.

We believe Lucy was born in Suffolk, Nansemond County, Virginia, as that is where her parents lived when enumerated for the 1910 Census.

I became aware of Lucy during a research trip to the area in 2001.  I found her headstone in with a group of Darden kin.  Trouble was, I was unable to place her in the family. Who were her parents?  Since then, I have researched for her many times.  So far, any death record has escaped me.  Resources, such as cemetery lists, never had her linked to her parents.  Every time I asked questions, did deep research, talked to those more aware of the lines in the area, specifically family researchers that were deeply involved in the area and preserving it's history, no answers were forthcoming.

All I had was this photo I took of her headstone:

Every time I researched looking for answers about Lucy, I ended my search in a state of mourning.  For 20 years I never forgot Lucy.

Last winter, I found this obituary, and finally I knew where Lucy belonged.

From the Virginian-Pilot and Norfolk Landmark, Norfolk, Virginia, published on June 4, 1912:
     "FUNERAL OF AN INFANT
Suffolk, Va., June 3.- - The funeral services of little Lucy Ann Darden, infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harry M. Darden, who died last night after a long illness, were conducted from the residence in Broad street this afternoon at 5 o'clock.  Rev. J. C. Robertson, pastor of Oxford Methodist Episcopal church, conducted the services and the remains were laid to rest in Cedar Hill cemetery."

Lucy has a memorial at Find A Grave, # 91122029.  I noted tonight that the memorial has the wrong year of death.  I suggested a change and I sent along a copy of her obituary.

It is always rewarding to reunite family, even if only in my data base.  I now feel at peace, knowing who Lucy's parents were and placing her in her rightful place in my history of the Darden family.

Rosetta Marguerite "Rose" (nee) Steffen Russett, Research Report, the As It Is Series.

Meet Rosetta Marguerite "Rose" (nee) Steffen Russett:

You will note, I have no mother for Rose.

CONSIDER WITH CARE:
Rosetta Steffen
in the 1880 United States Federal Census
Name: Rosetta Steffen
Age: 11
Birth Date: Abt 1869
Birthplace: Hanover
Home in 1880: Buffalo, Scott, Iowa, USA
Dwelling Number: 150
Race: White
Gender: Female
Relation to Head of House: Daughter
Marital Status: Single
Father's Name: Claus Steffen
Father's Birthplace: Holstein
Mother's Name: Dora Steffen
Mother's Birthplace: Hanover
Occupation: At Home

Dora Steffen  33 Wife
Rosetta Steffen 11 Daughter
Mary Steffen  9 Daughter
Mena Steffen  7 Daughter
Frederick Steffen  5 Son
Emma Steffen  4 Daughter
William Steffen  1 Son

Rose is enumerated with her husband George, entries abbreviated here:

1900 United States Federal Census, she is 31 years of age
Home in 1900: Davenport, Scott, Iowa

1910 United States Federal Census, she is enumerated giving an age of 42 years
Home in 1910: Davenport Ward 3, Scott, Iowa, USA

1920 United States Federal Census, age given as 50
Home in 1920: Davenport Ward 3, Scott, Iowa

Iowa, U.S., State Census Collection, 1836-1925, age stated to be 56.
Residence Place: Davenport Ward 3, Scott, Iowa, USA.  If you expand the census pages, and find on the second page where parents names are listed, Rosetta claims one Claus Steffens, age 77, born in Germany, as her father.  Her mother is listed as Dorthea, with a maiden name of Heimeiro, or something similar, place of birth Germany, age, left blank, which indicates she had passed.  FamilySearch dot org indicates that her maiden name may be Dorothea Niemeier, or similar spelling variations.  This research needs to be expanded. It will be a time consuming search, as in just a few minutes following links around on FamilySearch dot org already presents issues, aka, peeps linked together that do not appear they should be.
