We Have Bears, Just Not Fishing: The Estate Takes on Alaska

Pulled out of camp at 10:30.  It was a bit foggy over the water of the Portland Canal.

We are  headed to Hyder where you enter the US with no customs agent and where the bears are reported to be salmon fishing at Fish Creek Wildllife Observation Site, Tongrass National Forest That said, no bears today.  A immature eagle, salmon, salmon, salmon, sea gulls and a lovely pond with fantastic light. So pretty.

This little guy or gal was happy chewing away and in no hurry to scurry away from me.

Immature eagle.  Sony III zoom almost to the max.  This was the best shot and even after digital editing, it's not spectacular.  I was happy to get it tho.

The bears were not fishing, but, the sea gulls were happy to lunch on salmon.  These fish had done their duty, fought up the rivers to spawn, and then, well, they, kick the bucket.

The light was terrific, the greens and teals showed up so well in real life.  Photos, again, do not do justice.

You pay to get onto the board walk.  It is well done and maintained.  If a bear were to show up for a salmon meal, it would be a great vantage point for photos.  No bears today for us.

As part of the educational displays they had this bear skin, with paws/claws.  I do NOT want to have a close encounter with that!

Lunch at “the Bus”. Halibut. I had heard about this place on a Facebook group, that said, it was not on my radar or a huge bucket list item.  When I saw the sign tho and we were hungry, we headed over and experienced.  It's a one gal show, her hubby does the fishing, she does everything else.  Waitress, cook and chief bottle washer.  She is a character, I enjoyed her, and she shared photos of her son's wedding up at Salmon Glacier.  Wasn't a bucket list, but, now, I would say, if you are in the area, and she is cooking, it surely is a required stop!

Always on the lookout for oddities and this surely is one.  They won't have any snow build up issues with this roof incline, will they??

We skipped the long dusty, bumpy ride to Salmon Glacier. I think Man has seen enough glaciers to satisfy him.  Canadian customs, nice fellow, didn't make me drive under the canopy.  Easy questions, cannabis, tobacco, alcohol. Asked us how the trip was going, we shared with him our awe and appreciation of Alberta, the Yukon and British Columbia. He agreed with us.

Fuel and propane. It’s 2:30 and we are headed out someplace south(ish).

Love the waterfalls.

A few last photos of glaciers and waterfalls.

Lots of bushes turned red in the 2 days we have been here. Some of the fireweed has seeded out from bottom working to the tops.

The skies have been blue with about 1/2 clouds, white fluffy ones.  As soon as we jumped back on 37, the clouds became heavy and darker.

Black bear munching away on the side of the road. No photo.

Logging signs, logged in year xxxx, planted in year xxxx.  Also lots of lumbering mills, some of the largest we have ever seen.  This is just part of one, a very small one - -

Mixed weather, and in the mix. Windy!

Just before we pull off the highway near Kitwanga, British Columbia, for the night I see two black bears. One crossed the highway, after we had passed, I could see him in my side view mirrors. The other was sitting on its haunches watching the world go by, then meandered away. Sony III zoomed and the bear was moving away quite quickly.  Not a great photo, but, hey, it's what we saw!

148 miles today.
