Palmer Delights & Surprises: The Estate Takes on Alaska

Copyright 2019, CABS for Reflections From the Fence

July 13, 2019.

I can see the purple majesty of mountains.  It is cloudy, but, not smoky.  Rain forecast for most of the upcoming week.  We are thankful.

After a slow morning we headed to Palmer to drop by the Visitors Center. Had no idea there was a community fair doing in. Music on two stages, food vendors, craft vendors plant sales.  I believe it was the Palmer Museum, Garden and Art Faire. We wandered around and enjoyed the afternoon.

Growing huge cabbage here, it's a thing.

We could sorta see the mountains.

If you know the name of this pretty red round flower, let me know, thanks:

Then we drove over to the Reindeer Farm. We passed an opportunity to see reindeer when we were in Fairbanks. We stalled around and did not make the reservations. Good thing too, as that night was heavy smoke. We were delighted to visit and see the reindeer here.  We learned so much.

Reindeer are domesticated caribou.  They shed antlers once a year, so, if you own a farm, you surely use those antlers for decorations  - -

Too pretty to NOT take a photo - -

This young lady was such a delight.  She is a gifted child, is in special gifted classes.  Her questions and enthusiasm were charming. Her mother says, she is quite something to travel with and that is in a good way.  She sure cheered up my afternoon.  Face blurred as I do not have permission to show it, but, I could not resist sharing my joy in meeting her.

Man fed and pet them, I took photos.

The docent told us so many facts about the reindeer. Of course, there were too many to remember, but, I do enjoy these experiences, even if the details escape, the appreciation stays.

This small wood bison is a rescue animal.  Did you know their tongues are so rough they can take the skin off your hand/body?

This moose was also hand raised and is not really large, nor will he grow to his full potential till he is about 7.  He is also a rescue and belongs to the state of Alaska and will never be released into the wild.  He's quite friendly too, but, don't mess with these creatures, they can and do kill people.

Grocery run. Filled with fuel. We are back at camp. Tomorrow we head out.

Ohhhh, and it is getting sorta dark here around 2 or 3 AM.  The street lights glow and illuminate.  Sunset is at 11:24 tonight.
