Homer to Girdwood, Smoke, No Bears, Idjits: The Estate Takes on Alaska

Today we begin the “trip home”, sorta.  This is as far west as we will go or can go.  Now, we head back “east” and eventually south.  Today is day 46.

Today starts a bit warmer, and with sun, and of course, mist/fog/smoke enhancements.

On the road about 11:00 am.

Contemplated stopping in Cooper Landing to see if we could see bears fishing in the Russian River.  We were told the bears are not around. Some think they moved away from the smoke. Making the bears smarter than many humans.  By the time we arrived in Coopers Landing the smoke was so bad we could not have walked by the river at all, we could barely get out of the Estate to change drivers.

Lunch Soldotna. The Estate came about 4 inches from getting backed into by some idjit that knows nadda about RVs.  Man nearly broke his wrist/hand banging on this guys Class C to attempt to get idits attention. Man finally stopped the idjit, but, it was close and we were furious and upset by it all. Man’s hand was white from the chalking of idjits rig. Later I found Man's finger prints on the entry door handle of The Estate. That chalking stuff is powerful.

Ate lunch, grabbed a few groceries and I drove from there to near Gridwood. Where we camped at a National Forestry campground with no hookups, at $9.00 per night.  Paid for 2 nights.

We were low on fuel so drove 16 miles to fill up.  Yea, we did that, 16 miles to gas and 16 miles back.  But, now we can run the generator for heat, or for the ever important - coffee - in the morning.

On the way back to camp we pulled off at just about every pull off.

Another glacier, name unknown to me.  I have to try to take a photo, its the challenge of it all I suppose, Sony III and Carol vs distance, haze and smoke.

This was a small pulloff in the National Forest area, a short walk to a dock/observing/viewing spot.  Quite lovely.  This shot was done with panoramic.

Yes, I did take more than one photo, that's what I do, shoot, shoot, shoot.

At another pulloff, there was this lovely, quiet, deep lake.  The lady on this kayak, said she saw a salmon swim right under her.

Back at camp we had an adult beverage.  And some munchies dinner.  And discovered that the AT&T phone has a bad power input. Really?  Never a dull moment.

It is peaceful here, only the wind whispering through the tree tops, a few kids riding by on their bikes and someone running their generator non-stop.  Connectivity was non-existent, so we pulled the blinds, and curled up with our warm blankets.  Nite.
