A Most Beautiful Ride, Including the Rain: The Estate Takes on Alaska

Woke to this sunrise, went back to sleep for a while, next wake up, light rain. Can see mountains this morning. More than we have seen in over a week.

Rolling at 9:37.  Drove through Anchorage. Onward to the Keani Peninsula.

It has rained on and off, mostly, ON, all day.  We smell no smoke. I don’t see any haze that I can attribute to smoke,  I see clouds, mist, rain and more of each. We do not begrudge the rain.

I believe the water in these first photos is known as Turnagain Arm.

This is Beluga Point.  Between the pull off parking and this "mound" there is a rail road track.  With no trespassing signs, which peeps promptly ignore and jump the low fence, walk the tracks, take photos down the tracks and go over to this mound for photo ops.  If there were whales, I did not see them.  I did not jump the fence.

Seemed to be low tide.  The part closest to the fence was quite interesting.  It looked to be soft and muddy, and then, again, it did not.  A mystery for another time/research. Follow up - - these may be "mud flats".  Not to be walked on as you may get stuck.  This seems to be an area of some significant tides, called bore tides.  You get stuck, you may drown.

Yes, that is rain on the windshield. We saw a lot of our miles this way.  It was still beautiful!

We had considered hiking the Byron Glacier Trail, at Chugach State Park, which would put us right on or near a glacier.  We pulled into the parking lot and it was raining hard and the winds had the water (Portage Lake) in whitecaps. We had lunch and bailed. We will try again on the way out.  I believe I heard it is wet there a lot, and I was going to play along like a good native Alaskan, and hike in the rain, cept that wind!  But, our view during lunch was nice!

We continued along, enjoying our ride in spite of the rain. The mountains and waterways were lovely!

LOL  Cept this first photo.  It's really bad.  Rain drops, mist/clouds, movement.  This is an example of a bad photo that happens when driving at 45 to 60 MPH on narrow mountain roads.  You can even see the windshield wiper blade swish.

Saw a number of small waterfalls, but, always at the last moment, traveling too quickly and no place to pull over, so, no waterfall photos today.   But, this is not too bad, eh?

Fireweed is everywhere.  We learned that it is a plant that will grow first after a fire or when the glaciers melt back.  Seems it needs very little root structure. It is believed by many Alaskans that you can tell how soon the winter weather is coming back by watching the fireweed.  When the bloom hits the top of the plant and starts to seed out winter is getting close.

Arrived Seward about 2:30. The campground is next door to a sled dog kennel!  He. He. He.

It’s raining hard enough that we are reading and considering a nap!

Went to town. Found a place for dinner. Fish and chowder, etc.  Close to the best we have ever had.

Our view at our campsite, just past the road and the small bushes is Resurrection River.

We drove.  188 MILES today.  Were told the road from Anchorage to Seward is one of the 10 most beautiful drives, in the United States?  No matter where, it was purdy!!
