Another surprise for us on Gift Day was to find ourselves driving by the Yuma Proving Grounds. There is an official Army site, here, and there is another rather informative site hosted by The Military Zone. Just down the road from the main gate to the base we found the Wahner E. Brooks Historical Exhibit. There is quite a display of military equipment. There were more than these, quite a few more, just a sample here at Reflections.
This is a M4A3 Sherman, World War II era. (I know that because I took a photo of the signage! LOL) |
From here we headed south on 95 back towards Yuma. There are a lot of farm fields, they are harvesting lettuce and cabbage now. Watching the workers, observing the methodology and the equipment is eye opening, interesting, humbling. The workers are transported from work site to work site in buses, towing along the "facilities".
The actual harvesting is done around this interesting piece of equipment, a portable manufacturing line, of sorts. As it moves across the farm field, the workers harvest the crop and box it for market.
There ya have it, cabbage from the farm fields of Yuma Arizona to your cole slaw at your favorite restaurant.
Our gift day, full of such a variety of experiences, rough roads, blood oranges, military equipment, cabbage farming and the Cloud Museum, a day that ran the gamut. Further proof that you never know what you might discover round the next corner, or over the next mountain.

Amazing. I had no idea it was all done right there on the spot.
This will be a site my husband will want to visit for sure.
