Another Lunch Time GeneaBlogger Meetup!

Copyright 2014, CABS for Reflections From the Fence

Today Man and I had lunch with another GeneaBlogger, Charley, of Apple's Tree fame.  Charley, Frank (her Man), Man and I had a nice long visit.

Charley brought me a gift, ahhhh, you did not need to do that, but, he he, I do love it.  Charley must have thought I needed this after the last week of rants over medical insurance on Facebook!  LOL

She was correct, who doesn't need their very own dam-it-doll?

Hopefully I won't NEED the doll, but, in case - -

Enjoyed our lunch, thanks for meeting with us.  Hope we can do it again sometime.

(And thanks again for the doll.)

Lunch Time, Time for a GeneaBlogger Meetup!

Copyright 2014, CABS for Reflections From the Fence

Man and I had the distinct pleasure of having lunch today with fellow Geneablogger and friend, Lisa Wallen Logsdon and her hubs, Mike.  Lisa writes Old Stones Undeciphered.

So, we had lunch and a wonderful LONG visit.  And, the staff at the Cracker Barrel did not even ask us to leave, even tho they had a LOT of people waiting for tables.

Thanks Lisa and Mike for the meetup.  Man and I really enjoyed the visit.

Advent Calendar, My Annoying Christmas Letter, Errr Card of 2011

Copyright 2011, CABS for Reflections From the Fence

GeneaBloggers across the world are once again participating in the Advent Calendar challenge.  This year because I am still attempting to finish the never ending "THE Trip" series, I am probably not going to have a lot of submissions, and, I am not much of a fan of re-running prior years articles.  However, if you insist, I can direct you to my 2009 submission on this very subject, Christmas Cards, in which I freely admit I am one of those friends and family that writes those really annoying holiday letters.

But, I am going to take this opportunity to write my 2011 annoying holiday letter, and here it is!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dear Family, Friends and Fellow Bloggers,
Oh, my, 2011 is nearly over.  Used to be, pre-blogging days, I had long long annoying holiday letters to include in my Christmas Cards.  You will either be totally relieved or slightly annoyed to hear that this year I have very little to say.  That is because I have been chatting away at record paces all year long on this blog.  Everything I might have told you in my long long annoying holiday letters is already here on the blog.
To summarize our year, it started out in Las Cruces New Mexico, and will end in Gulf Shores Alabama.  2011 was the year we finally traveled west of I 35 and into the gorgeous red land of Arizona and Utah.  It is also the year I finally got to the research mecca, Salt Lake City (and no, I have NOT processed all those files, YET).
We returned to our stick built home in SE Michigan at the end of July, the re-entry was full of dead batteries, and other issues of equipment left to sit unused for 8.5 months.  Man spent a great deal of time and a bit of angst getting all back up and running, and then, snicker, we left again, mid-November.
We lost a member of our fur family, our beloved Miss Tilly, in Custer South Dakota. Who knew she would go before her half-brother, Mr. G (aka, Gallagher).
Our human family thrives, over all they seem to be pretty happy with their lot in life, and our family gatherings are always such a wonderful thing, harmonious, joyful, and full of a bit of our family tradition, lots of teasing.  We are so proud of them all, our sons, our daughter-in-laws, our twin grands.
And, so, 2011 comes to an end, and 2012 looms on the horizon.  What will 2012 bring, we hope, much happiness and health to our many friends across the USA.  We have several family members and friends that are battling cancer and other health issues, they are constantly in our prayers.
So, to end this abbreviated issue of my annoying holiday letter, Man and I wish you and yours a peaceful, wonderful holiday season and a hugely successful year in 2012.  May your wheels (for our RVing friends) roll you to places yet unexplored.  May your brick walls (for my genie friends) come tumbling down.
May your family be happy.  May your souls find peace.
Love and Peace to All,
Carol & Man
* Images, my Christmas village display.  Reflections is decorated for the holiday as well, hope you enjoy the photos and graphics all through the right hand column of the blog.
Who Do You Think You Are and GeneaBloggers Radio
Copyright 2011, CABS for Reflections From the Fence
Disclaimer, I don't do a lot of reviews.  Oh, and I did not watch all the shows from last years WDYTYA, I hard a real hard time watching them, I found them rather annoying.  I have no financial interest in Ancestry (I don't even have a subscription at this time), GeneaBlogger Radio, or in the telie show, "Who Do You Think You Are".  That said, I am going to do a review of the show and the radio show tonight.
Tonight was the first episode of the new season of "Who Do You Think You Are?"
After a bit of a snafu over the real time that Man and I are currently camped in (mmm, one really should change one's watches, SIGHHH), I got to watch the show.
But, first I tuned into the new GeneaBlogger Radio.  Thomas, I would like to see your FULL resume'. This cannot possibly be your first rodeo, err, radio show.  It was there that several of the other "attendees" let on that in the Pacific Time zone (yep, that is where we are now, PT) the show would not start for a while yet, 20 or 40 minutes later.  Say what?  My watch says - - OOOOO OOOOO - - watch says Mountain time.
So, I listened to the new radio show, the sound was excellent, clear as a bell.  There was a chat going on at the same time, that was a hoot, moved very fast and a lot of fun and camaraderie between attendees.
As the radio show ended, WDYTYA started in the Pacific time zone, and surprise!  One of the 2 stations we are getting here had the show on!  WHAHOOO
Here is a short summary of how I feel about this first show of season 2 of WDYTYA.  I posted this on FB first, this is pretty much a repeat of my FB comments:
"Those really annoying lead ins after each commercial are GONE! The short lead outs at the end of each segment were short, sweet and NOT obnoxious. Those lead ins were so annoying to me, ick, gag me -
They used white gloves when necessary, smart on their part. Of course, the discussion over when gloves are necessary is raging on, but, in my opinion, they were wise in their decisions on when to put on the gloves and when not to. My opinion, which is NOT that of archivist.
The issue of not showing how long it really takes to find out all this stuff, or the steps in between, still outstanding. It is telie, commercial telie at that. So, they have to slip over stuff.
The Ancestry commercials still annoy the  $*#* outta me. Misleading to the nth degree, so I walk away or I might toss a rock thru the telie.
These are ALL my opinions, which are worth about 2 cents on a red letter day - - - -"
Score:  GeneaBloggers Radio, 4 stars.  Who Do You Think You Are, 3 stars, it felt a lot more comfortable than last years show(s), at least this weeks program did, calmer somehow, and I am not even sure how to explain that.  Ancestry commercials, negative 4 stars.
And, now, I am taking this time zone confused body away from this computer and towards my book and zzzzzzzzzzzz land - - nite all!
Sharing a Slice of Life, Fireworks
Sharing a Slice of Life, the meme this week is:
"...let's hear your family fireworks stories."
I remember lots of fireworks, one year in Charlevoix Michigan, they had good ones!  Many years as a child, the specifics escape me.  Taking our 3 sons to fireworks when they were young, one year, it seems we sat in our car over by Belleville Lake (Michigan), again, many of the specifics escape me.
But, there is one 4th of July that remains more clear in my memory.  The year we moved from the city to the country.  Man had never lived anywhere that did not have sidewalks.  Now we lived on a gravel road, with well and septic system, and NO sidewalks!
We moved on July 1st.  Just before the holiday.  One of the families that lived a few houses, errr, acres away, had a huge party each year and they had their own fireworks show.  It was pretty good too, illegal for sure, but, they did have good fireworks!
I thought it was right nice of them to welcome us to the country that way.
*On the subject of the 4th of July, and the American Revolution, I have been reading other genie-blogs today and am totally overwhelmed at the number of bloggers out there that have Revolutionary soldiers/ancestors.  And, how many have multiple ancestors who proudly served.
Winter 2010 Games, GeneaBlogger Style, My One and Only Entry in the Competition
Over at GeneaBloggers they are playing the 2010 Winter Olympic Games, geni-style. What fun. I am not actively participating as many of the challenges would have to be done at the stick built. So, I thought, hmmmm, Carol, a review of the tasks always are good for your research.  This is a great list, providing in depth review, good stuff, it is a great place to measure how you are doing in your research and recording of results.  I decided to do a one time chat about the Olympics, no formal participation, no medals awarded. I found I aready do a number of the challenges listed as a matter of standard operating procedure.  I did 4 or 5 challenges in preparing this post.  There are quite a few challenges on the long list for the Winter Olymics that need more of my attention, back at the stick built. My review of the challenges:
1. Go Back and Cite Your Sources! Many moons ago I reviewed all 4000 plus individuals in my data base and verified or provided a source for each and every event/fact. Since then, I have a hard and fast rule, do NOT enter a birth date, death date, any event, without a source, and if I have more than one source, that is even better. I now have over 16,000 individuals in my data base, and I gotta say, I am glad I don’t have to start doing that NOW.
2. Back Up Your Data!
Digital files are backed up to an external hard drive, about once a month. I also have a recent copy of my data base and photos on my iPod touch (photos updated when I synch the touch). Data base backup is also stored online at a hotmail email account (note it is FREE). I have my data base and supporting files on 2 other computers.  Digitizing photos and documents has resulted in over 7000 images attached to my data base, but I do not feel this project is anywhere near the finish line.
3. Organize Your Research!
Reviewing and tweaking my digital files is a constant battle. A massive re-organization effort made about 18 months ago when a new laptop was purchased has worked out quite well. My main goal was to reduce the mega number of subdirectories to a mini number and to name them such that they all arranged themselves ABOVE “Program Files” on Windows Explore. I had to come up with some ?creative? names, such as “Lousy mail list” and “I Got Work to Do” and “All in the Family”. I actually had fun thinking out of the box for file names and surprisingly, they have all stood the test of 18 months time.
4. Expand Your Knowledge
I have temporarily imbedded a "live" Google Map of where Man and I are staying for the winter at the bottom of my blog. (Live versa a screen shot OF the map which I can then post as an image.)  I love it, HOWEVER, I am not pleased that it seems to take the reader to the bottom of the blog page when loading the page. The map in this format may will be going bye bye, so take a look, quick. I did a Wordle and added it to the right column of the blog and I did a Heritage flag over at we are multicolored, likewise added. Those two are likely to remain here on Reflections From the Fence for a while.
5. Write, Write, Write!
(Insert a little black humor here -- Somehow, THIS is not a problem for ole Carol -- I cannot seem to stop writing since I started Reflections.)
I have used the new Pages app for my blog, I am still tweaking this. It is near the bottom top (edited and moved February 22) of the right column. Unfortunately due to the background color (black) of this template, the Pages tags cannot go under the banner.  I have looked and do not see a way to change the color of the print on the tags.
I built a welcome area to my blog a while back (almost at the top of right column). I briefly explain what I write about and what other information can be found on my other web pages/blogs. One link (see the graphic of a pedigree chart) at the top of the right column will lead you to 8 pedigree charts covering my 4 grandparents and Man’s 4 grandparents. I may eventually add additional charts to this page, so come back and check sometime.
I enjoy carnivals, and participate in some of them. I frequently write biographies, usually as part of a series I have called “Birthday Observances”.  I include a photo of the ancestor if I have one, and share some of their vital statistics. If I am lucky enough to have additional stories or information I will share some of that as well on those Birthday blog posts.
6. Reach Out & Perform Genealogical Acts of Kindness!
I enjoy reading blogs and commenting on all the great ones I find, I follow quite a few of you good folks - - so many to follow, so little time - - and I keep finding new ones each week.
I LOVE Find A Grave and try to spend some time over there each and every week, building memorials for the families I research, linking and adding a photo here and there. My Tombstone Tuesday post on the Holsinger cemetery was the stimuli to add photos on the Find A Grave site for the cemetery and for all the stones that were found during my visit there a few years ago. I was humbled when the original submitter transferred all the memorials to me for my care.
Volunteer work, a cause dear to my heart. I urge all to “pay it forward” and, ohhhh, be kind to your volunteers.
The Olympics challenge is chuck full of great ideas, great challenges, a very comprehensive list of skills and chores you should strive to do all the time, as standard procedures during your research and input process. I had a lot of fun building my Wordle, Heritage Flag and the Google map of our current location.
Ole - What RVing GeneaBloggers Do on a Rainy Day
Other evening as I sat here working on the ever present pile of papers on my desk, I received a surprise email from Becky over at kinexxions.  Becky asks, "aren't you somewhere near Pensacola??"  She continues,  "I am too, shall we lunch??"  (No, those are not her exact words, I am taking some editorial privilege here.)
But, of course we shall lunch!
Becky writes a wonderful blog, she calls herself a  "GeneaHistorian".  (LOVE that!) She is currently basically a full time RVer, traveling in her mini van, with tent, computer, camera and cooler (that is the abbreviated list, but of course).  She is traveling and seeing the USA.  And, she takes wonderful photos, which you just know really get my attention.
So, we have the RVing, the photography, and the Genea-Blogger thing in common, we sure won't lack for things to chat about, will we?
We met at Vallarta Mexican Restaurant, on the west side of Pensacola.
The food was good, the company was great.  What a wonderful way to spend a rainy afternoon.
Thanks Becky for remembering that Man and I were in the area.
Ole!!
*Man took a photo of Becky and Moi, it is on his phone. He is feeling a tad under the weather with a nasty sore throat and, well, that photo will be there till he feels better!!
