The Drive to Prince George: The Estate Takes on Alaska

August 10, 2019

Despite best intentions, we did not get a “early” start. Sigh. Rolling by 10:10.

It’s a partly cloudy day, or better stated, partly sunny.  And starting out at 68 degrees F.

First stop. Fuel.  When fuel stations are so many km and/or miles apart you fill up at just about every one you pass.  In this part of British Columbia you do not pass a fuel station. Ever.  No one passed this one. 3 RV’s lines up.  Cars and trucks parked everywhere. It’s like a fuel station zoo.  The window cleaner seems to have soap in the solution!  Whhoooeee.  Have seen so many with dirty water only. But ya use it anyway to get rid of the bug remains.

First mile, construction zone. Waited about 5 minutes for pilot truck. First in line, the lady with the stop sign was a hoot!

Hazelton is home of Carol Huynh, a Canadian freestyle wrestler.

Seems there is a New Hazelton and a Hazelton, this statuary at the edge of New Hazelton - -

We had to drive around a mountain - -

We saw a lot of these "logging truck" signs.  Note the yellow smiling faces alongside the roadway and the unique advertising for a tow operator to the far left of the photo.  Ya, that ole truck!

Miles and miles of trees, with mountains as the backdrop.

The Estate had a big day - - 10,000 miles on the odometer!

Glaciers, hay fields. Saw 2 fields with this unusual stacking of bales. Mikes and miles of bales and only 2 small fields with this configuration. They are a bit difficult to make out, as I barely caught them with Sony III, but, they are in the shape of a triangle.

Civilization.  Horse farms and fences, oh, and a golf course!!

Between Evelyn and Smithers, more glaciers - -

Then Adam's Igloo Wildlife Museum, near Smithers. I did a quick net search, and couldn't get a lot of info due to shaky internet.  It may be closed.  I did find one photo.  Personally, I did not get a photo.

Canadian Geese flock flying practice. Have seen very few geese, a few in the last two days.

Mountain summits are now about 850 meters. Rounded off 2700 feet.  Rough math, I’m aware.

Lunch at A& W. Long time since we had a real root beer.

Lily pads are turning yellow and brown.

Vanderhoff, largest wooden mill we have ever seen and the geographical center of British Columbia.

Arrived Prince George at 6ish. We made good time. Only 2 small u-turns. 307 Miles today.
