The Dreaded Holiday Letter, 2022 Style

Copyright 2022, CABS for Reflections From the Fence

Well folks, this is gonna be short and sweet,

2022 has been quiet, full of research and indoor and outdoor gardening for Carol, a little tinkering now and then for Man and of course family events and lots of rest for both of us.  In other words, still staying in Pandemic life style mode.

In early February we had a good snowstorm, with a bit of ice first and dropping temps.  I captured this image of Man's boot print, my boot print, a deer foot print and tire prints.

A few days later I captured this snowy sunrise over the "swamp":

I had been gifted an amaryllis, my first ever and it was amazing.  It actually bloomed twice.  It grew all summer on the kitchen table, taking over the space.  In September I trimmed it back to the bulb, put in the garage and last week I brought it back in the house, now we see if it survived.  The flower color was stunning:

We continue to delight in the peace provided by our almost 5 acres and the woods, the wildlife and their antics. We currently watch the deer and I did spy a raccoon the other day (not happy about that, let me tell you).  Last winter we had a muskrat come up to the house through the deep snow, foraging.  That tail just creeps me out!  LOL.

In early May the flowering crabs put on quite the show:

The fawns are more my style. The mothers of fawns have decided our lawn is a safe place to drop their young for the day, we stumble upon them lying quietly waiting for mom to return. This year, we found the fawns in the grass several times.  I also observed a mom coming back for her little one, chattering to it from about 20 yards, watching the young one stand, sniff, and then with all its youth, run to mom for a late afternoon meal. That half a minute remains imprinted in my memory. I can't remember what I had for breakfast, but, I can still see that little one running/leaping cross the lawn to mom.  Here is a close up of that little one I captured while mom was off feeding and resting:

Then came deck gardening time, three images, the first from the end of June:

The next two are from fall, October 10th and 19th.  They sure performed this year and the frost came late, I enjoyed every day:

Mid November I captured this colorful sunset from the front porch:

From Man and I:

May the holiday season bring you joy and peace, good eats and lots of family hugs.

Nellie (nee Fenton) Robicheau, Research Report, the As It Is Series

Copyright 2022, CABS for Reflections From the Fence

This continues a series of posts, done in a very efficient (make that speedy fast-sometimes) manner to share some research on the ancestors.  This is NOT intended to be the end all to end all report.  It's a work in progress, to show you what I have found, right or wrong. Kind feedback is welcomed via comments.

Let’s begin - -

Meet - - Nellie (nee Fenton) Robicheau

Boy hoooodeee, she has been quite the chase.  Let's start by what I am sure of:

Nellie Fenton
in the 1911 Census of Canada
Name: Nellie Fenton
Gender: Female
Marital status: Single
Race or Tribe: English
Nationality: Canadian
Age: 7
Birth Date: Feb 1904
Birth Place: Nova Scotia
Census Year: 1911
Relation to Head of House: Daughter
Province: Nova Scotia
District: Yarmouth
District Number: 53
Sub-District: 1 - Arcadia
Sub-District Number: 1
Place of Habitation: Arcadia
Religion: Baptist
Other Occupation: NG
Can Read: No
Can Write: No
Language: E.
Family Number: 44
Neighbors: View others on page
Household Members:
Name Age
William Fenton 47
Ida Fenton 36
Marray Fenton 12
Mable Fenton 17
Percy Fenton 12
William Fenton 9
Nellie Fenton 7

Nellie has not been found as of November 2022 in the 1921 Canadian Census.

But, let's back up to Nellie's birth record.  Have not found one.

And, now the mystery thickens.  The next few paragraphs are in blue because they are research done to "disprove" a theory.  Let's begin, it's a bit messy.

There are some researchers that feel Nellie was not the child of William and Ida (nee) Jarvis Fenton.  They suggest that Nellie was born Oct 27, 1896,  County Harbor, Guysborough, Nova Scotia, Canada.  I found the delayed birth certificate of this Nellie, she is still living as of 1961, married to a McFarlane, or similar last name, and names a mother of  "Carrie Fenton".

Was Nellie (born 1896) an adopted child of William and Ida?  I kept an open mind, and considered it as possible, they had adopted two of their parent-less grandchildren.  UNTIL I researched Carrie Fenton, Nellie's (born 1896) mother. Carrie was also known as Caroline Fenton.  Carrie/Caroline married in 1901 and died in 1902.

However, before marriage Caroline was still living with her parents in the 1901 census.  According to that 1901 census, Nellie (born 1896), was living in the same household as Carrie/Caroline. Nellie is listed as a "daughter" of the head of household. Caroline was also shown as a "daughter".   Nellie as a "daughter" becomes suspect if you had seen her delayed birth certificate and the other evidence I have uncovered.

Nellie was also in the 1911 census, again listed as a daughter.  By 1921 she was a young bride with some babies of her own.  This Nellie, born 1896 is NOT the Nellie that married John Robicheau in 1921.   See below my sig line for the delayed birth certificate of the Nellie born 1896, and index information on those census enumerations.

Indeed, we have two Nellie Fentons, living in the same province, born within 8 years (give or take) of each other.   And, so, we now go back to discussing the Nellie Fenton Robicheau who is our person of interest.

I still have not found a birth record for Nellie born 1904.  As a matter of interest, the Nova Scotia archives site does not allow for a first name only search, yea, I tried that too.

I find Nellie's (born 1904ish) marriage to John, they were married in late 1921.

I have not found birth record of her children, Ida, Victor or Nellie, as the wonderful Nova Scotia archives vitals web site does not include births after 1920, as the publication date of this this blog post.

I did find her death certificate tho - -

I have created a Find A Grave memorial for Nellie, # 245154833.  I have no obituary for her, yet.

Her hubby's history after her death is problematic.  Some researchers feel it is the John who has a Find A Grave memorial # 139067582.  If you visit you will see a photo of a headstone.  You will also note that he has a AKA inscribed on that headstone, that being William Edward Surette.  William also has his own Find A Grave memorial, see #  139067541.  Long searches for John and or William have turned up little.  I did find a second marriage for "a" John, in 1929, to one Lettie or Lottie  Bengay (her name was a bit difficult to read, so, the disclaimer is, her name might be something else). I found nothing on Lettie/Lottie either.  I will repeat the searches, of course, because, hey, it's research, and stuff shows up when or where you least likely expect it to.

Research on her children has been difficult as well.  We shall leave that for future research and/or reports here on Reflections.  Except for this one tidbit- - I have been told by an elder of the family that her son, Victor Robicheau, was raised by a Fenton grandfather or uncle and is buried as Victor John Fenton, Find A Grave memorial # 225423463.  I have verified with the cemetery that Victor John Fenton is the son of one John Robicheau, per their records.

And, yes, this week's research has left me drooling in anticipation of the 1931 Canadian census public release in or about June 2023.  Boy, whooooeee, do I have questions.

Let’s begin - -

Meet - - Lillian L. Lashbrook - -

As you can see, Lillian became an angel shortly after she arrived here.  Her stay was so short I have very little to show for her.  I have not found a birth record for her in Chicago or in Jackson County, Michigan.  Her  only record is the death record.

To date, I have never found any death notice in the papers, nor any burial record, no Find A Grave memorial.

From the Augusta Chronicle, Augusta, Georgia, published on March 23, 1993:
     "ARRANGEMENTS INCOMPLETE
Mrs. Annie Clifton Johnson, 80, of Rocky Ford, Ga., died Monday.  Crowe-Fields Funeral Home, Milan."

A full obituary has not been located.

I have not located any Social Security Death Index data.

She currently has no Find A Grave memorial.

The research when presented this way seems rather straight forward, except:

There is another Annie Johnson living in close proximity, born in 1912, died in 1991 that many researchers have confused with Annie Clifton Johnson died 1993!  It took me (with the assistance of an excellent researcher/cousin/genie angel) several days to figure out which Annie was "our" Annie.

I will present the "other" Annie below my signature line in an attempt to keep the two Annies clear and separate.

This is Annie May Johnson:

Her obituary appeared in the Augusta Chronicle, Augusta, Georgia on December 17, 1991, naming her as Annie Mae C. Johnson, her husband as Raymond B. Johnson, 5 sisters, Caribel Jordan, Bessie Porter, Ruby Flanders, Doris Neighbors and Lucille Brantley.

She has a Find A Grave memorial #66475470.

She is not the Annie Clifton that married Elliott Johnson, who was the subject of my search.  Yes, you heard several moans and groans and ARGHHHHHs.

*** Links, URL's, for the most part will not be included henceforth on my posts, as so many of them change and then I have to come back and try to re-discover and relink.  Frankly folks, I have no desire to spend my limited time here on this side of the sod with those kinds of do overs.  As researchers, or just members of the internet community, sites such as Find A Grave are easy to find, some are free to use and with the information I am sharing with you, hopefully, you can duplicate the research/findings. That said, I have seen memorials at Find A Grave be removed.  If you have questions, I suggest you leave a nice comment for me. OR find the method I have outlined on my blog for contacting me.
