1940 Census Release, Almost, ALMOST!

Copyright 2012, CABS for Reflections From the Fence

Time is marching on, the April 2, 2012 9 A.M. release of the 1940 U.S. Census is drawing closer and closer.

The frenzy is gathering strength for many.  If you have not been caught up in the frenzy, I suggest you try doing a Google search on the term, 1940 census.  Oh, yea, you will be reading for a while!  LOL  For example, here is The National Archives page about the 1940.  The National Archives has FAQ pages, codes, questions asked, information about enumeration district maps, instructions for the enumerators and just so much more.  Why, they even have a link to Stephen Morse's great ED finding page, which is another must place to visit, learn and use in the next few days.

For others, we are gearing up for the indexing.  We have been at FamilySearch.org and the1940census.com practicing our indexing skills.  If you have not signed up to index yet, you can do so at the1940cenus.com site.

I have no idea where Man and I will be on April 2, 2012 at 9 A.M.  I can tell you that sometime that day I will be jumping on the indexing site.  I hope you will all be there with me, remember, I am counting on all my friends, researching genie types and all of the rest of you too to help me get this DONE!!  THE Trip, THE Encore awaits, I am really hoping we can get this done by departure date, about November 15, 2012.  Maybe I am dreaming (like what is new, eh?), but, the power is with us, and in our numbers, the more of us there are to index, the sooner this will get done.

Remember, each page will be indexed by two different indexers.  Any time there is a disagreement, the page will go to an arbitrator.  Take your time indexing each page, even though I am in a HUGE hurry to get this done, don't hurry to the point that you make typos (mmmm, why would I know ANYTHING about this, eh??)  Steady as she goes will hopefully keep the accuracy rate UP and we won't over burden the arbitrators.

We are ALL volunteers, the indexers AND the arbitrators.  We all have good days and bad, but, we will get this done, it will be a great project and product and you will hear me WAHHOOOING as Tana and the new ride and Man and I and fur kids head out next November to discover more of our beautiful western USA.

Now, if I have not persuaded you with this guilt trip, then, how bout PRIZES??  Yep, there are prizes, you can find out all about it on this page at the1940census.com.    Seems that this week the prizes are Visa gift cards, now, who can't use one of those??  Seriously.

So, sign up to index, figure out how to enter the Visa gift card contest and hold onto your hat, it is almost, ALMOST time for the 1940 census release!

* The disclaimer, there are side benefits for being a 1940 census ambassador.  SOOO, I need to reveal, as part of the1940census.com ambassador program this blog post enters me into a drawing for an Amazon Kindle Fire, which is this weeks prize. I gotta tell ya this, so I have.

The 1940 Census, A Start Up Airline, And Several Digressions by Moi

Getting Closer, Won't Be Long Now, Are You Ready?

The excitement builds, across the Blogosphere more and more posts are appearing reminding us, excitedly, that it won't be long until April SECOND, 2012, when the 1940 U.S. Census will become available to the public.

The census actually was recorded as of April 1, 1940, and even tho we are supposed to have access to it 72 years later, the 1st of April falls on a Sunday, sooooooooo we wait ONE more day!

The other evening my thoughts meandering here and there, I decided to try a search for what happened on April 1, 1940.  It did not matter what, just something. I found this web site, the accuracy of which I can not totally vouch for, but, hey, it is fun, so if you don't take it too seriously, have a lookie see.

They mentioned things like, hey, it is April's Fools Day.  But, of course.  It is also the birth day of Wangari Maathai, Kenyan environmentalist, recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize (d. 2011). April 1st is also Edible Book Day and Fossil Fools Day.  So, the fool that I am I guess I will be eating a fossil that day, wonder how the environmentalists will feel about that. Oh, never mind, silly foolish me!

Also mentioned on that page of things that happened in 1940 really got my attention, and, it had to do with airplanes!

Some of you may be aware that in my youth I took a few flying lessons, yes, as in airplanes.  I don't particularly care for big jets, but, I still have a yearning to fly the small ones.  If a plane or helicopter fly nearby, I will be craning my head every which way to see what is zooming overhead. So, needless to say, I was very interested to see that British Overseas Airways Corporation reportedly was founded in 1940.  I was slightly disappointed to discover that according the the Wikipedia page the founding date really was actually 24 November 1939.  But, unless you are shooting horseshoes or tossing hand grenades, November is pretty close to 1940 and hey they were still in their infancy in 1940!

One of the fun facts on this Wikipedia page was that "BOAC operated scheduled flying boat services to colonial possessions in Africa and Asia."  Flying boats, you have my attention now!  Have you ever flown on a flying boat??  I have, just once, as a teen, it was awesome!  Of course, I did not really think so then!  My daddy had taken us fishing somewhere in the far north country of Canada and there were no teen boys there.  I hated it, and made sure he knew all about it.  And, he never forgot it either!   LOL  Oh, now, I would just LOVE to take that trip, as long as I had a few good books along, I still don't care for fishing!  But, as usual, I digress - -

So, 1940 had BOAC in their infancy, and across the pond we had our 1940 census.

And, soon that census will be coming to a web site near you.  That said, it is going to be a bit rough finding your ancestors if they lived in a big city.  Did you know that each Enumeration District was something like 80 plus pages??  If you do not use Steve Morse's great hints to reduce the numbers of ED's you must search page by page through those big cites.   Even if you do use Morse's terrific finding aids, you are still going to be looking at a LOT of pages to find Uncle Eugene and Aunt Florence.

SOOO, why not join in the indexing instead. Just surf on over to this web site and sign up.  It will be fun and fulfilling and the very best that volunteerism has to offer, you can't beat this with a stick.

I'll let you in on another little secret, there are a lot of die hard family researchers that I know that will NOT be searching those ED's page by page.  They are waiting for the index.  Really!  They are waiting!  Why??  Because some of us have been there, done that with the 1930 census.  We could not wait to get at it!  And, then the reality hit, at just how many hours we were spending looking for just one family, remember, at first, there was no index for the 1930 census. Oh, and we were spinning film, not searching at the break neck speed of the internet.  Our experience has taught us, wait for the index.  The index will make your search easier and faster.  Besides if that fails, hey, you can still go do the 80 some pages of several ED's in those big cities looking for Eugene and Florence.

I will be indexing, will you??  Let's get this done, so those die hard family researchers don't have to wait long and remember, I have that encore trip Man and I are planning.  Help me, come index, send us on another trip.

And, that is how I can manage to chat about the 1940 census, the indexing project, the start up of an airline, a fishing trip gone bad, horseshoes, hand grenades and eating fossils in one blog post.

Please come put me out of my misery, SIGN UP TO INDEX THE 1940 CENSUS, you can tell, I really need help!  Lots of help!

** The disclaimer, well, imagine my surprise to find out there were some possible side benefits for being a 1940 census ambassador.  Who knew, I did not sign up for prizes, but, hey, I'll play the game.  SOOO, I have been instructed that I need to reveal, as part of the1940census.com ambassador program this blog post enters me into a drawing for a $50 Amazon gift card, which is this weeks prize.  Since I almost never win anything I am sure that this fun stuff will not affect my desire to see the 1940 census indexed as fast as we can get it done.  But, I gotta tell ya this, so I have.

I AM Going to Index, I AM, I AM, I AM

Copyright 2012, CABS for Reflections From the Fence

As a family researcher/genealogist, unless you have had your head in the sand for the last year or so, you know what April 2, 2012 means!

1940 CENSUS RELEASE!!

Yep, here it comes, ready or not!

I am happy to announce that I have become an Ambassador for the 1940 census indexing project.

Now comes the confession:

I have never indexed one thing at FamilySearch, or anywhere else online. I have not joined in the fun or the projects till now.  My excuse, err, reason, I have been too busy.  Blame it on THE Trip, blogging, Man, fur kids, family, my volunteer work for our local genie society, need for sleep, need for meals, the Demon and limited amounts of energy and time. (That's my story and I am stickin' to it!)  Blame it on a lot of things, simple truth, I have just not made the time in my life for indexing on line. I appreciate all that have, they bring us wonderful stuff over at FamilySearch.org.  My research would be seriously lacking without all the dedication and hours volunteer indexers have donated.  I thank them daily!

Next confession:

I have not done ONE single thing to prepare for the 1940 census.  I have not contemplated one person I would love to go hunting up, other than the obvious, my parents and grandparents, and great grandparents.  I blame it on the same issues as mentioned above, time and energy.  This fact alone makes me realize just how much I NEED the indexing to be done.  Really need it!

Next confession:

I do not like learning curve, OK, I HATE learning curve.  So, this is where I am going to start, Getting Started -  Make History.  (If you have not signed up yet, this is where you do that.  Come on, click in!)

OK, that is ENOUGH confessions for one day.  Now, is time for the pep talk:

Join me!  Help index the 1940 census.  If we all jump in and do some, it can be done in record time.  Really!   I will thank you all time and time again when I can find my ancestors in those big cities like Norfolk Virginia where my daddy was living then.  I don't want to do a page by page browse search for him.  HELP ME!!  Sign up and index!

Thank you!

* I really need this to be done in record time, because selfishly, I don't want to still be indexing after November 1, 2012, cause Man and I are planning a followup to THE Trip, and then I really won't have the time!  Please help me be ready for THE Trip THE Encore  - - oh, oh, think I just named it!

** Oh, and guess what, you don't even have to be a family research enthusiast to do this indexing, all you need is the desire to help me get this done!

***  The disclaimer stuff:  No one paid me anything to join the indexing effort, to use or not to use any of the sites I am mentioning.  The key word here is VOLUNTEER!  The monetary pay for volunteers is non-existent, the payback in satisfaction and self worth garnered from the time and effort used to volunteer, PRICELESS.

This N That, Some of This is IMPORTANT

Copyright 2012, CABS for Reflections From the Fence

Reflections and Man have been a bit busy this week, running errands and other life stuff.  A long walk here and there, and by the end of the day, I seem to have enough energy left to format a few pages of the next book I am working on for the Lenawee County Family Researchers, and not much else.  I read blogs and Google+ and Facebook, and always seem to find some great articles, I found several this week that had great hints for me and where I am with technology, or need/want to go with technology.

I note with humble joy that I have added several new followers in the last few weeks, welcome and come back often, thanks for following.

Now, the REALLY important stuff:

Social Security Death Index, major news about that all over the net, blogisphere and GeneaBloggers.  Here is a link, seriously, if you have not followed a single link I have ever put here on Reflections and you are a family researcher, then for cripes sake,

CLICK HERE NOW!! (Link dead, Oct. 2018)

And, for fun for our researchers - - the 1940 census comes to a web site near you April 2nd!  Indexing will NOT be available on April 2nd.  But, you too can get in on the fun and help index.  I will be doing some of this indexing, what an opportunity, expand my learning curve, learn more about technology, help researchers for years to come!  What is NOT to like here??  WOOT.

So, click here, and index 1940.

And, now, Man and I are off for a lunch with good RVing friends, laughter, possibly some planning of next winter's winter get aways, and who knows what else - -

* As of October 2018, this census has, of course, been indexed.   But, you can index other data sets at FamilySearch.  Go here and give it a try!
