This continues what I hope I can turn into a series of posts, done in a very efficient (make that speedy fast) manner to share some research on the ancestors. This is NOT intended to be the end all to end all report. It's a work in progress, to show you what I have found, right or wrong. Kind feedback is welcomed via comments.

Meet Rufus Edward Darden and his wife Martha Rebecca (nee) Barham Darden:

Today we are interested in his daughters Louisa and Francis. Last time we discussed Rosalind and Edward and their connection to the Picot clan. At some point I may circle back and chat more about Rufus and Martha specifically, but for now I will just tell you that Rufus has a Find A Grave memorial at # 19442130. Martha has a Find A Grave memorial at # 60364923. You will note I do not have her parents indicated on my image, I have not yet chased down this line.

No death record found as of January 2022. No obituary found January 2022. No Find A Grave memorial as of January 2022.

We did however, find a detailed Chancery Case in Southampton County, Virginia (thanks to my genie angel for kicking me in the right direction on this one), this case is close to 50 pages. We find Francis gives a deposition in 1893 and signs a document giving power of attorney in 1895 (or similar, remember, I am no lawyer, eh? Frankly, I was more interested in the last date I could find where it showed her as still living than the specifics of the document, I circle around during research and come back to the "meaning" of the document later.)

We also find this, noting it is only part of the page, reference the section that states she died in June of 1897. She is named F. D. Channing in this page.

At this point Charles Edward Channing, born 1887 is an orphan. He is under age, an "infant". He eventually is found living with his aunt Lou and uncle Joseph Channing.

So, now, let's chat about Louisa Pope "Lou" Darden:

FRANKLIN, VA., Nov. 22 - - Mrs. Louisa Pope Channing, 76, resident of Newsoms, died Wednesday in a Portsmouth hospital. She was the widow of Joseph Henry Channing, of Newsoms. She is survived by one sister, Mrs. G. C. Picot, of Como, N.C. The body was taken to the W. J. M. Holland & Sons Funeral Home, in Franklin, and on Thursday will be taken to the Newsoms Baptist Church, where it will lie in state for one hour before the funeral rites. A funeral service will be held at 2:30 P.M. Thursday at Newsoms Baptist Church, with burial in Newsrooms Cemetery."

Louisa has a Find A Grave memorial at # 35414912.

There we have it, two sisters (daughters of Rufus and Martha Darden), marry two brothers (sons of James and Evelyn Channing), and raise one son. It was quite the search.

Meet Julian Henri Picot and his wife Antoinette Sara (nee) Vann Picot.

You will note, I have very little entered in the data base about them. That is because, frankly, I have not researched them past the connection with their children - - -

I will point out that both have a presence at Find A Grave, Julian can be found at # 19026658 and Antoinette can be found at # 19239325. If you visit their memorials, you will see there are 6 children linked to their parents. COMO - - Guy Carlton Picot, 96, ?dent of Hertford County. He was a retired farmer and merchant and a lifelong resident of Hertford County. He was a member of Buckhorn Baptist Church, which he served as senior deacon for many years. He was the son of the late Julian Henri Picot of Plymouth and Antionette Sara Vann Picot of Como. His wife, Rosaline Darden Picot, died in January, 1952. Mr. Picot was the only surviving charter member of the Hunt Club, which was begun in October, 1887. He is survived by five daughters, Miss Antionnette Vann Picot, Miss Marion Barham Picot, Miss Marietta Blount Picot, Miss Hannah Barham Picot, all of Como, and Mrs. Vernon Tucker of Suffolk, Va.; three sons, Huge Baird Picot of Como, guy Carleton Picot Jr. of Richmond, Va., and Harvey Baylis Picot of Franklin, Va.; five grandchildren; one brother, M. "MRS. PENA P. DARDEN.

Murfreesboro. - - Mrs. Pena Picot Darden, widow of Eddie T. Darden, died Thursday afternoon at her home in Como after an extended illness.

Mrs. Darden was the daughter of the late Dr. Julian H. and Antoinette Vann Picot of Hertford County. She was born December 16, 1870. Since childhood she had been a member of Buckhorn Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School class and was organist for over 20 years.

Surviving are two daughters, Antoinette Darden, Mrs. Rosser B. Bryant and one son, Rufus E. Darden, all of Como; one grandson, R. B. Bryant Jr.; two brothers, G. C. Picot of Como and M. W. Picot of Suffolk, Va.; a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 3:30 p.m. at Buckhorn Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. J. E. Lanier, assisted by the Rev. E. Norfleet Gardner. Interment will be in the church cemetery."

EDWARD T. DARDEN

Mr. E.T. Darden of Como, N.C. a former resident of and native of Southampton County, died suddenly at Como, N.C., Monday morning, May 9. He was the son of the late Captain Rufus Darden of Newsoms and a brother of Jno. B. Darden and Mrs. J.H. Channing of Newsoms, having many warm friends in this section who will regret to know of his death.

He is survived by his wife, who was Miss Tina Picot, daughter of Mrs. Antoinette Picot and the late Captain Julian H. Picot of Como, two daughters and one son, and was a brother of Mrs. C.G. Pico of Como.

The funeral services were conducted from his late residence in Como Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock by Rev. E. Norfleet Gardner, pastor of Buckhorn Baptist Church, assisted by Rev. J.P. Essex of Newsoms and Dr. W.V. Savage of Churchland, interment following in the churchyard burying ground. The pallbearers were G.C., L.J., T.B., H.E. and H.B. Picot, John B. Darden, Jr., William Darden and J.H. Channing of Newsoms.

Again, I point out that the parents of Edward Theophilus “Eddie” Darden are Rufus Edward Darden and his wife Martha Rebecca (nee Barham) Darden.

So, what we have is two siblings of the Picot family marrying two siblings of the Darden family.

However, that is not the only double marriage in this gang. Two more of Rufus and Martha's children marry siblings, two daughters, marry two brothers. This was discussed somewhat in my post titled "Charles Edward Channing, Research Report, the As It Is Series.", published here on January 26, 2022. Next post I shall discuss in more detail, the biological and adoptive parents of Charles, they being these daughters and sons.
