Judy G. Russell writes a terrific blog, The Legal Genealogist, that you need to read, every single post. Really, just do it! Figure out how to follow, or have it emailed to you, or bookmark it, but, you need to read every post. Simple!
Now, the other day, she wrote a piece that I personally feel may be the most important post I have read on any blog in 2013 so far. I will say, maybe the most important post I have read in the last year or more.
WHY?
Because she explains stuff, in this case, Terms of Service on the FamilySearch site.
You need this information.
WHY?
So, you can make an INFORMED decision on what you submit or post to that site (or any other for that matter).
WHY?
So you do not regret your decision to submit data later on.
WHY?
No going back.
In my simple thought processes I operate this way, if I type it, and post it, or if I submit it, I know I will no longer have control over whatever I just posted or submitted. You post anything to the internet, it is out there FOREVER. (If you doubt that, find the Wayback Machine web site.)
Photos posted WILL end up "borrowed" by others without asking you. Count on it. If you post them, accept it. No, it is not right, it is in my world, reality, partly, because I do not have the means to fight copyright infringement.
Copyright, something Judy discusses in detail in a way you will understand (another reason to read her blog daily!), is all fine and dandy, but, for me, I just figure, if I post it, someone will use it somewhere, somehow, or just borrow it and never ask permission.
Now go read her post, FamilySearch: sharing is forever. She says it much better than do I.
Make an INFORMED decision about your photos, your family research data and what you post or not to web sites.

Yep, don't I KNOW? LOL! But, for all the photos and info stolen from me, I have certainly copied (for my own use) other people's photos of ancestors that I've found. I am thrilled to have them so I know others are thrilled to have mine. Tit for tat. The difference is, I don't post any of 'em without getting permission to do so and I always thank those that ask my permission to post mine.
I also love Judy's blog and was lucky enough to attend her presentations at the recent Fairfax Genealogical Society Conference - she is a dynamite speaker - so into her subject. If you get a chance to hear her speak, take it!
Judy's blog is great. She has helped me understand so many legalities.
