Funeral services will be held at Aulander Baptist Church Sunday at 2:30 p.m. Surviving are one son, Dr. M. A. Pittman of Wilson; one sister, Mrs. Magnes Joyner of Woodland, three brothers, Dr. Q. H. Cooke of Rich Square, John R. Cooke of Aulander and E. M. Cooke of Wadesboro."

Lucy Ann (nee) Turner Darden, Research Report, the As It Is Series.

Meet Lucy Ann (nee) Turner Darden

Lucy's Find A Grave memorial # is 38454288. I am the current memorial manager. I have not edited her memorial in some time, I may do that after I write this post.

Her notes, some with ** and comments. We have been fortunate in finding a number of "gossip" column reports, etc., in the newspapers. They sure add to her story:

It is compiler's belief that Lucy is found on the 1870 U. S. Census of Newport District, Isle of Wight County, Virginia in the household of her brother, Peyton R. Turner. She is listed as Lucy Pruden, age 21, at home and born Virginia. Compiler does not believe she was married to any one by the name of Pruden, but that a recording error by the enumerator was made.

Julian and Lucy were married by W. E. Allen. Her parents are listed as Jas. S. and Lydia K. Turner. Here is part of the marriage record from the record books of Isle of Wight County, Virginia. The red stars are marking the month (February), the day of the month (the 1st), names of groom and bride, marital status of groom and bride (both single) and their places of birth. From the March 11, 1899 issue of the Virginian Pilot, Norfolk,Virginia, page 7:

"Mrs. L. A. Darden and Miss Estelle and Harry Darden will leave to-morrow to visit some days Mr. L. H. Whitley's family, in Isle of Wight county."

From the Virginian-Pilot, July 21, 1899, page 6:

"Mrs. Lucy A. Darden is spending some days at Blue Ridge Summit, Pa."

From the Virginian-Pilot, August 4, 1899, page 6:

"Mrs. L.A. Darden and Miss Estelle Darden have returned from Virginia Beach."

From the Virginian-Pilot, Norfolk, Virginia, published on February 9, 1900:

"PERSONAL

Miss Estelle Darden returned from Smithfield, where she visited her sister, Mrs. J. S. Marshall."

Lucy is enumerated on the 1900 US Census of Holyneck District, Nansemond County, Virginia: Mrs. Lucy Darden, born Sept 1847, 52 years of age, widowed, married 29 years, 5 children, all survive, born North Carolina, parents both born North Carolina; Estelle, daughter, born Jan 1872, age 28, single, born Virginia, father born Virginia, mother born North Carolina; Julius C., son, born Oct 1878, age 21, born Virginia (same data on birth of parents), attending medical college; Harry W., son, born Apr 1885, age 15, born Virginia, at school. Also in the household is Lemuel E. Turner, Lucy's brother, born Sept 1859, age 40, single, born Virginia, grocerman.

From the Virginian-Pilot, Norfolk, Virginia, published on July 21, 1900:

"Mrs. Lucy A. Darden is spending some days at Blue Ridge Summit, Pa."

From the Virginian-Pilot, Norfolk, Virginia, published on August 11, 1900:

"PERSONAL PARAGRAPHS.

Mrs. Lucy A. Darden has returned from her stay at Mt. Summit, Pa."

From the Virginian-Pilot, Norfolk, Virginia, published on June 22, 1904:

"Mrs. L. A. Darden and son, Harry, are visiting relatives in Smithfield, Va."

Lucy is enumerated on the 1910 U.S. census of Suffolk, Nansemond County, Virginia: Lucy C. Darden, age 40, widowed, 5 children, 2 of whom survive (in error, probably the number of children in the household as of that day), born Virginia, father born North Carolina, mother born Virginia, no occupation; William, son, age 17 (? hard to read), born Virginia, both parents born Virginia, salesman for grocery; James C. (given name very hard to read), son, age 13, born Virginia, both parents born Virginia.

From the Virginian-Pilot, Norfolk, Virginia, published on May 14, 1903:

"BRIEF MENTION

Mrs. P. D. Gwaltney, Jr., and Mrs. John Marshall, both of Smithfield, Va., are visiting their mother, Mrs. Lucy A. Darden, at Bank and Pinner streets."

Lucy is found on the 1920 US Census of Smithfield Town, Isle of Wight County, Virginia in the household of her daughter, Alma Marshall, she is listed as Mrs. Lucy Dardin, mother, age 72, widowed, born Virginia, parents both born Virginia.

From the Virginian-Pilot and Norfolk Landmark, Norfolk, Virginia, published on April 19, 1923:

"Dr. J. C. Darden, of Salem, passed through Suffolk yesterday enroute to Smithfield to visit his mother, Mrs. Lucy Darden, who is quite sick."

From the Virginian-Pilot and The Norfolk Landmark, Norfolk, Virginia, published on June 27, 1923:

"SUFFOLK BRIEFS

Suffolk, June 26 - - Mr. And Mrs. W. H. Darden, Mrs. Harry Darden and Miss Dorothy Darden left last night for Smithfield to be at the bedside of Mrs. Lucy Darden, who reported critically ill."

In the column immediately to the right (same day, same newspaper) we find:

"DEATHS

Mrs. Lucy M. Darden, aged 75 , widow of J. C. Darden, and one of the best known women of this section, died Tuesday afternoon at the home of her daughter, Mrs. John. S. Marshall, at Smithfield. She was a native of Isle of Wight County, but had spent many years in Suffolk. She is survived by five children, Mrs. P. D. Gwaltney, Jr., and Mrs. John H. Marshall, of Smithfield; W. H. And H. M. Darden, of Suffolk, and Dr. J. C. Darden, of Salem, Va; a sister, Mrs. L. H. Whitley, of Isle of Wight County, a brother Edmond Turner, and fifteen grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted from Trinity Methodist Church, Smithfield, Thursday morning at 9:30 o'clock, by the Rev. W. H Atwill. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Suffolk at about 11:30 a.m. The active pallbearers are to be six of Mrs. Darden's grandsons, W. H. Darden, Jr., Austin Taylor Darden, P. D. Gwaltney, 3rd., Chester Gwaltney, John M. Marshall, Jr., and Darden Marshall. The honorary pallbearers are Dr. L. C. Brock, George F. Whitley, C. T. Minton, J. W. Holloway, J. Wesley Chapman, B. F. Chapman, J. L. Underwood and B. P. Gay, all of Smithfield, and H. C. Hall of Chuckatuck."

On one of my visits to the area, I found that Lucy had a "calling card" at the Isle of Wight (Virginia) Museum. I was lucky to obtain a copy. Isn't that fun?
