Lewistown Montana to Medora North Dakota, A Very Scenic Day

AUGUST 2013

This day would be about 300 miles.  It was scenic, and full of long stretches of 2 lane roads, rolled hay, more long stretches of road, a train or two, gorgeous geological formations, a cow or two, and more.  We would stop at Medora North Dakota for 2 nights and tour part of the Theodore Roosevelt National Park.  Now,  for some sightseeing:

Between Jordan and Brockway, out in the middle of not much, other than gorgeous countryside:

I do love the "painted" rock look, the layers.  Mother Nature did a fine job painting, don't you think?

Just a bit further along, this different geology. It does not get old when it changes this much.   The changing scenery keeps me ooohing and ahhhing and snapping photos till the battery in Sony needs changing.

And, look what passed us (not a bad capture when you figure we were both going about 70 MPH):

Of course there were trains, nice long ones, they seem to go as far as the eye can see, maybe longer.

By this time we were off the 2 lane highways and on I -94, east of Glendive.

Hey bud, you got some good stash, you know, good grass?  Ooops, sorry.  Wrong story line.:

About half way between the Montana/North Dakota state line and Medora, some red, I do love me some red.

Almost off the road for the day, but that road keeps stretching eastward - - 

Medora was a fun stop, and the Theodore Roosevelt National Park (south) was gorgeous. It is high on our "must return" list.  You know it was great when I took 310 photos in one day!

A Short Hike to Twin Falls, Two Medicine, Glacier National Park.

(Someday I have hopes of catching up on so much, even the blog. )

After we rode the boat Sinopah cross Two Medicine Lake, we were off on a short hike.  We had a nice guide and she pointed out flora and fauna items of interest as we hiked.  Our views along the way:

Our first glimpse of one of the falls:

This photo was taken right off the camera and the only editing done was for size.  That water was moving very fast and even with the bright light it looks like trick photography.  Nope, just Mother Nature ripping along.

Both falls, Twin Falls:

After all our fellow hikers had their fill of climbing around the hillside, we turned to head back.  This may be Two Medicine Creek, I could not get Google maps in conjunction with Sony GPS function to give up the name. There was a lake upstream from the falls, named, No Name Lake??  So, I'm good with Two Medicine Creek, you too??

Back on the lake, we find some other "boaters" enjoying the day.

It was a glorious day.  We have one more day to spend in the area before it is time to head east back to Michigan.  We will take 14 days to get from Glacier to our home in SE Michigan, making a few more stops to see something new, and a few to see some old favorites.

Finally we have some blue skies again.  We are going for another short boat ride and a guided hike, the clouds here will lift later, but, what a nice way to start the day.

We make a few stops along the way for photos and history lessons.  Here at Maria's Pass we see this obelisk and markers.

I particularly love the quote by Theodore Roosevelt.

Near East Glacier Park Village I stop for this photo op, I am a fan of sculpture such as this:

As we turn to go towards the Two Medicine area we see horse back riders and their dogs, enjoying the day:

We stop at the edge of Two Medicine Lake, pretty little place:

We make a short stop at the Two Medicine General Store where we have a snack and visit with this creature, a columbian ground squirrel.

Time for our boat ride, that is the store.

Yes, there is at least one water fall:

The mountains loom above, in all their grandeur.

Off the boat, we are ready to hike.  I'll bring you that next time:

JULY 2013

Our last day in Glacier and we ended it with a boat ride out of the Many Glacier area.  It was perfect.

Despite the cold water, many venture out, a few in kayaks.

On the boat on Swiftcurrent Lake, we get a wonderful view:

We are headed for that quaint little red building, where we will get off the first boat and will get on another.  Small hike in between.

You can see from this map, our route, leaving Many Glacier hotel, crossing Swiftcurrent Lake.  The dotted line is the Grinnell Glacier Trail, we walk from the dock on Swiftcurrent to Lake Josephine.

The view of Lake Josephine just before we board our second boat.  For those that may be interested, altitude is 4882 feet above sea level.

I can only imagine how gorgeous this would have been if the skies had been blue, but, alas, this is what we saw, and seriously, nothing wrong here, eh?

And, then, came the waterfalls.  Sony, zoom and I had a blast.  I am only sharing a few of these photos, I took so many!

And, let there be water falls, mountains, and glaciers.  Remember this is at the end of July.

And, water falls from another angle.  I believe there were 4 distinct falls here.

The teal color of the water is true, comes from glaciers melting.

This ends our dream trip to Glacier National Park.

It was marvelous, surprising, and yes, we left much unseen.  Fodder for future trips??  Maybe.
