City of Rocks State Park, New Mexico, Winter Sojourn 2014-15

DECEMBER 2014

Let's finish our day trip out of Deming, New Mexico. This is where we are now and will spend the rest of our day and this post right here. The park is one square mile consisting of 34.9 million year old volcanic rock formations

You know me, it's all about the formations, and boy, do we have formations!!

And, we have formations with a campsite. Too small for Tana, but, if we ever get The Estate out this way, we would fit!

Rockhound State Park & Spring Canyon State Park, Deming New Mexico, Winter Sojourn 2014/15

While we stayed in Deming, New Mexico we took a ride out to Rockhound State Park. One of the attractions at this specific park in the past has been the privledge to rock hunt. In the past rock hounds were allowed to take home a small amount of stones like quartz crystals, geodes, jasper, perlite. I have seen references to up to 15 pounds per person, but, had trouble verifying that number on the New Mexico web sites I was reviewing to write this post. So, verify, call ahead, or go and if you can gather rocks, enjoy! Man and I left our 15 pounds per person there in 2014, so you are welcome to our share. LOL

For me, it is always about the drive, the quiet (no cell phone service in 14 out here) and the rock formations.

As we wander about, err, drive about, we head towards Spring Canyon State Park (just a skip, hop and a jump from Rockhound). Like I said, for me, its the shapes of the rock formations.

Inside Spring Canyon State Park we find this sweet picnic area.

And, we find this sign, time for a hike:

The views as we stroll along, and no, neither of us felt the need to "leap":

If you look hard enough you will see Man in the middle of this photo, enjoying his hike, well, waiting for me while I snap photos! LOL . This photo shows the expanse of our beautiful country, that little spec of a man vs Momma Nature and her beautiful children. This WILL keep you humble.

On the way back to Deming we must descend, the grade along here is 17%. That's significant.

It was a nice afternoon drive. Totally enjoyed it!

Luna Mimbres Museum, Deming New Mexico, Winter Sojourn 2014/15

Here are some photos, highlights of this great collection. I took about 190 photos that day, many for my own delight. The lighting many times interfered with a nice photo, but, not the memories. In no particular order.

Front and back of what appears to be a early "oil" delivery "truck". Nicely cleaned up, I was taken by this unusual vehicle, fascinating.

OK, how many of you remember what this is? How many of you may have used one in your working days? I did! Yep, I sure did! I know, makes me an antique.

I would love to have a replica of this hanging in my home. Simplicity at it's best.

They actually had two "iron lungs". Man and I have seen these in other museums, but, I believe this is the first "baby" size one we ever came across. (Get your kids vaccinated, we don't need polio coming back.)

Saddles, do they spark your imagination? How many miles, how many riders, how many hours spent in the saddle?

See, the glare/reflections of the lights? I tried, really I did. SIGH. A collection of bells. It was so interesting. Really!

Isn't this lovely? I imagine someone refurbished it, but, just lovely. OK, maybe "cute as a bug" is a better descriptive word?

Again, in no particular order here are some shots of Native American artifacts. I believe most, if not all of these, reside in the Mimbres Indians Pottery Room:

Now, this rug, is very handsome indeed, and this is a word for word transcription of the signage the museum had below it:

“Navajo Rug

If this rug could talk, oh the tales it could tell. Rumor has it that a cowboy walked into Madam Millie’s one evening carrying this rug. He dropped it on the floor and said, “I want trade.” The rug covered the floor of one of the rooms at Madam Millie’s for many years. It sure could have some good stories! Talk to us! Talk to us!  

Rug was purchased at a disposal sale at Madam Millies’ Brothel, Silver City, New Mexico.”
