Simon or Simeon Young, Research Report, the As It Is Series

Copyright 2022, CABS for Reflections From the Fence

This continues a series of posts, done in a very efficient (make that speedy fast) manner to share some research on the ancestors. This is NOT intended to be the end all to end all report. It's a work in progress, to show you what I have found, right or wrong. Kind feedback is welcomed via comments.

Let's begin - -

Meet - - Simon, or as was found written once (so far) in records, Simeon, Young.

For so many years, so many I cannot recount how many, this is how Simon resided in my data base.  In fact, for years, it was even more sanitized, as he resided as Mr. Young.

I had notes, Betsey was Betsey Young at death, who was Mr. Young?  Where did he come from?  Then, I found this marriage license, sometime, I think around 2020, which is the date I seemingly added this image to my data base:

I had disclaimers all over the place, in my notes, in the caption under this image.  Then, this weekend, I found an obituary in the Coeur d'Alene Press, Coeur d'Alene, Kootenai County, Idaho, published on January 21, 1893 for one Simon Young, step father of E. Lashbrook.  Let the research begin anew.

This is how Simon resides in my data base now - -

His notes, and I will caution, this is a work in progress.

From the Coeur d'Alene Press, Coeur d'Alene, Kootenai County, Idaho, published on January 21, 1893:
     "THEIR BATTLES ARE ENDED.
Two Old Soldiers Are Buried Side By Side
Simon Young, step-father of E. Lashbrook, died Wednesday, Jan. 18, of pneumonia, after an illness of 15 days.  Mr. Young came to this city last fall from Minneapolis to make it his home, and intended to build a residence the coming spring.  When about 20 years of age he was made captain on a large steamboat plying the Hudson River, and for years held that position.  Several children residing in the east will learn of his death with sorrow.  He was an honored solider in the war of the rebellion, and the funeral took place yesterday, under the auspices of the G. A. R., from the Presbyterian church.  Rev. Stowe conducted the services, after which the remains were interred in Fort Sherman cemetery to rest with those of comrades who preceded him to the unknown world.  He was 75 years of age, and leaves an aged wife to mourn his loss."

**I have not determined any Simon Young as a Civil War veteran via Fold3 data base, as of yet.

From the Spirit Lake Beacon, Spirit Lake, Dickinson County, Iowa, published on February 3, 1893:
     "DIED
YOUNG.  In Coeur d'Alene City, Idaho, January 18, 1893. Simeon Young, aged 75 years.
Mr. Young was one of the pioneers of this county, having come here from Illinois in the fall of 1868.  He filed on a piece of land in Richland township, where some of his family have resided ever since.  He also pre-empted a quarter section in the name of his son, D. L. Young, and son-in-law, E. V. Davis, Seth Thomas and William Jenkins made the trip overland to Sioux City in June 1869, the two former to take homesteads on land they had pre-empted and Mr. Jenkins and Mr. Thomas to make final proof on their homesteads.
Deceased lived here a few years ago with his children; went from here to Oregon with the intention of making that place his future home.  Not liking the country he returned after a couple of years and lived in Minneapolis.  He went to Idaho last fall where he died.  He has three brothers, and one sister, living in Illinois; also leaves eight children to mourn his loss, D. L. Young,Mrs. E. V. Davis, Mrs. Wm. Warner,  Mrs. Sheldon Birdsall, Mrs. De Witt Myers, C. D. John and Loren Young.
Mr. Young has for years been an earnest Christian, trying to follow the blessed Saviour and trying with patience to run the race set before him. The race is run, he has crossed the river and is forever at rest."

Simon has no memorial at Find A Grave.

* Disclaimers, I use Find A Grave, Ancestry dot com, FamilySearch, several newspaper subscriptions, free sites, such as Virginia Chronicles, Virginia Chancery Cases online at the Library of Virginia and more to research my ancestors.  I pay for subscriptions, full price.

*** Links, URL's, for the most part will not be included henceforth on my posts, as so many of them change and then I have to come back and try to re-discover and relink.  Frankly folks, I have no desire to spend my limited time here on this side of the sod with those kinds of do overs.  As researchers, or just members of the internet community, sites such as Find A Grave are easy to find, some are free to use and with the information I am sharing with you, hopefully, you can duplicate the research/findings. That said, I have seen memorials at Find A Grave be removed.  If you have questions, I suggest you leave a nice comment for me. OR find the method I have outlined on my blog for contacting me.

**** I hope the usual happens, within hours, sometimes minutes, I do another search and something shows up.  Well, I can hope.
